You Are Invited to Join the G-Force

Girl Force is an after-school running and fitness program dedicated to addressing the changing needs of today’s young girl.

We want to empower girls by teaching them fun and effective lifelong fitness habits, healthy food choices and positive self-esteem.  We believe that healthy, confident girls become healthy, confident women.  By providing a foundational knowledge of nutrition, exercise, body awareness and improved self-esteem in a non-judgmental, non-competitive and supportive environment, we hope to give young girls the tools they need to reach their full potential.

Who can participate? Girls in grades 3-6.  Due to limited space, however, enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Applications should be turned in as soon as possible.  Please include a telephone number and email so that we can contact you about enrollment.  These can be submitted online no later than Friday, Feb. 3.

What do I have to do? G-Force specifically provides a running/walking fitness program that includes yoga, stretching, strength training and middle-distance running and walking. Each girl, with the help of her parents and an advisor, will determine her own fitness goals. Each week, we will run/walk as a group, but “workouts” will be determined based on individual need and/or ability.  We will conclude the 10-week session by participating in the Habitat Hammer 5K in Elkin on Saturday, April 21. Each girl will complete the distance by either walking or running; however, we will participate as a group, cheering each other on and supporting one another in our efforts.

When does the group meet? Tuesday afternoons from 2:30-3:45 pm at EES.  Our first session will meet on Tuesday, February 7.  Pick-up time is promptly at 3:45.  Please plan accordingly.

We will practice every Tuesday, rain or shine.  If it is raining, we will practice in the gym; however, if it is not raining, we will be outside regardless of the cold.  Everyone should bring warm layers, including hats, gloves and a coat.

Who can benefit from this program? Our sessions will provide overall conditioning for girls who have not traditionally been as active as well as provide foundational stretching and strengthening for even the competitive athlete. Basically, the program can benefit any girl interested in improving her health and physical fitness level. We want to see all shapes and sizes of girls. Similar to adult women at an exercise club, each girl (& parent) will come with different goals in mind. We have included a questionnaire that parents and girls will complete so we will be able to keep individual goals in mind when working with the girls.

How do you incorporate nutritional education into the classes? Each class will have time devoted to a nutrition "theme" through journaling and group discussion.  A weekly newsletter will also be emailed to all parents and daughters and should be discussed as a family.

How do you incorporate self-esteem building in your program? We address esteem issues in the same way as nutrition, through journals, short presentations, and small group discussions. We believe that by setting goals and meeting them, each girl will discover they are capable of more than they might have imagined.

What else is provided? In addition to the individual running program, nutritional education, self-esteem enhancement, and the camaraderie of good friends, G-Force will provide each girl with a G-Force T-shirt, which we will all wear at the race, a G-Force water bottle, and the entry fee in the 5K race event.
